How to Choose Batteries
- 1). Find the type of battery that your electronic device requires by checking the compartment where the battery is stored. It should contain instructions telling you what type of battery to buy.
- 2). Decide if you want your battery to be rechargeable or not. While a rechargeable battery will save you money in the long run, you'll need to buy the appropriate charging equipment. A rechargeable alkaline battery will need different equipment than a nickel metal hydride, or NiMH battery.
- 3). Think about your purpose. If you need a battery to fuel a light for spelunking, then you want one that isn't going to die on you when it's not being used. For example, NiMH batteries can lose up to 1 percent of power a day just from not being used if you don't by the pre-charged type.
- 4). Compare the costs. While one type of battery may cost less per unit, they may not last as long as other batteries. This causes them to cost more in the long run. On the flip side, you may only need to use the batteries once, without ever charging them again. In this case, buying batteries that can only be used once may be more cost-effective.
