How to Partition a 320 Drive

    • 1). Download the Western Digital utility (see Resources). Download either the .zip file or the .exe file. Save the file to the computer's desktop. Unzip the file if you downloaded the zipped version.

    • 2). Click on the file named "WD Passport 2.5 W98 installer.exe" to begin the installation of the WD Passport driver. Do not attach the portable hard drive yet.

    • 3). Reboot the computer into Windows.

    • 4). Plug the My Passport USB drive into an available USB port on the computer. The computer will install the WD My Passport drivers, and the operating system will recognize the USB drive.

    • 5). Open a DOS window by typing "cmd" into the Search input box in Windows 7 and Vista, or by typing "cmd" into the "Run" and then "Open" input box in Windows XP or Windows 98. A DOS window will open and allow DOS commands to be entered.

    • 6). Type "FDISK" and press the "Enter" key to start the Microsoft Disk Partitioning utility.

    • 7). Type "Y" to enable large disk support, when prompted.

    • 8). Select Number 5 --- "Change Current Fixed Disk Drive."

    • 9). Select the "My Passport USB" drive from the list. The internal hard drive will be listed as Drive 1, and the My Passport drive will list as the next available drive.

      Press Number 1 --- "Create DOS Partition or Logical DOS Drive."

      Press Number 1 --- "Create Primary DOS Partition" and press "Enter."

      Select "Yes" when prompted to use all the available space on the hard drive for the partition.

      Press the "ESC" key twice to exit the FDISK utility. The My Passport USB drive is now newly partitioned and ready for files.
