How to Use Regular Chlorine Bleach in a Swimming Pool
- 1). Clean your pool with your pool's vacuum system. Follow the instructions included with the filtration system for connecting the vacuum to the filter pump. Get into the pool with the vacuum and slowly vacuum the walls and floor of the pool to suck up any algae or debris.
- 2). Use a pool testing kit to assess chlorine levels in the water. Take a sample of the water, using the test tubes included with the kit. Add the appropriate testing solution according to the instructions included with the kit. Compare the color of the water to the included color wheel to determine the chlorine level in the pool. The ideal range is 2 to 4 parts per million (ppm).
- 3). Calculate the amount of bleach you will need based on the readings from the test kit. A half gallon of bleach will raise a 20,000-gallon pool by about 1 ppm.
- 4). Mix the bleach with water from the pool. Put the bleach and water in a bucket and stir together.
- 5). Dump small amounts of the watered-down bleach in different areas of the pool until the bucket is empty. Allow the filter pump to circulate the bleach through the water for about four hours before using the pool.
