How to Kill Moss in Grass in Central Oregon

    • 1). Rake the moss using a metal rake. The only way to kill existing moss is to physically remove the mossy patches on the lawn. In central Oregon, late winter or early spring is the best time for raking the moss.

    • 2). Overseed the previously mossy areas with grass seed. Moss is opportunistic, always seeking bare patches on the lawn. Eliminate bare patches from your lawn by maintaining a full, healthy, grass environment.

    • 3). Trim back trees and shrubs to increase sunlight to the lawn. Moss prefers shady, moist conditions, and grass prefers direct sunlight. Prevent the future growth of moss in central Oregon by maximizing sunlight on the lawn.

    • 4). Add lawn lime to the lawn to increase the soil's pH levels. Grass prefers high pH and moss generally prefers low pH. Lawn lime is critical to creating a lawn ecosystem favorable to grass and counterproductive to moss.
