How to Use the Fantom Drive for Tivo

    • 1). Unplug all of the cables attached to the TiVo. Place the TiVo on a table with the back facing you. Remove the screws from the TiVo's four corners with the Torx screwdriver. Grip the outer case. Pull the outer case towards you to separate it from the front panel. Lift the outer case off the TiVo.

    • 2). Remove the screws surrounding the drive bracket at the upper-right corner of the TiVo with the Torx screwdriver. Lift the drive bracket up. Remove the two plugs connected to the back of the hard drive with your fingers. Place the bracket upside down on the table.

    • 3). Push the dip switch on the Fantom that is next to the connectors from "Master" to "Slave" using the tip of the Torx screwdriver.

    • 4). Unplug the power cord from the PC. Open the side or back panel of the PC with the Phillips screwdriver. Remove the screw from the corner of an empty hard drive bay with the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver. Pull the drive tray out.

    • 5). Pull the two plugs out of the bay. Connect the two plugs to the appropriate connections on the back of the Fantom hard drive. Place the Fantom hard drive in the bay. Close the side or back panel. Reattach the power cord.

    • 6). Turn the PC on. Download and install a TiVo-specific formatting program to the desktop, for example, the free MFS Tools (see Resources). Double-click the file once downloaded to decompress the program to the desktop.

    • 7). Eject the disc tray. Place a blank recordable CD on the tray and close the tray. Follow the onscreen menu commands that pop up to prepare the blank recordable CD for burning.

    • 8). Drag the TiVo-specific formatting program onto the folder of the CD that has appeared on the desktop. Restart the PC once a copy progress bar has appeared, filled in from right to left and disappeared.

    • 9). Hold the "F8" key down until a menu appears onscreen. Select the CD from the list of choices and press the "Enter" key. Select the TiVo-specific formatting program and press the "Enter" key.

      Select the Fantom hard drive from the list of choices presented and follow the menu commands to format the drive in a TiVo format. Select "Exit" and press "Enter" when the program says that it is done.

      Shut the computer down once it has rebooted. Unplug the power cable. Remove the side or back panel.

      Pull the two plugs out of the back of the Fantom drive. Remove the drive. Place the drive tray back in the bay and reattach the screw. Close the side or back panel and reattach the screws. Plug the power cord back in.

      Remove the screws from the side of the hard drive bracket with the Torx screwdriver. Slide the hard drive out of the bracket. Slide the Fantom hard drive into the bracket with the connections on the back facing out. Reattach the screws to the side of the bracket. Change the dip switch on the back of the Fantom back to "Master" with the tip of the Torx screwdriver.

      Insert the two plugs on the TiVo into the appropriate connections on the back of the Fantom. Place the bracket back into its original position and reattach the screws.

      Place the outer case back on the TiVo. Reattach the screws. Return the TiVo to its original location and reattach the cables to it.
