Town of Evening Calm, Country of Cherry Blossoms earned two Eisner nominations: Best Short Story and Best U.S. Edition of International Material - Japan.

Two young girls separated by a generation find that memories of the World War II devastation of Hiroshima has repercussions that reverberate across their lives even years after the bomb.

In the first story, Minami is a twenty-something year-old seamstress living with her mother in the post-war shanty towns near the river. After witnessing the loss of her father and classmates, Minami finds it difficult to open her heart to love again.

The second story, Country of Cherry Blossoms takes place 20 years after Town of Evening Calm. This time, the focus is on Nanami, Minami's niece at two periods of her life -- when she is a tomboy schoolgirl and when she's a wiser and somewhat sadder young woman in her early twenties. While it's been years since the bomb, the echos of losses from long ago linger.
