How to Plant Ginger Lilies
- 1). Pull weeds from your planting site located in an area with full sun to partial shade exposure. Clear away brush, unwanted plants and other debris.
- 2). Loosen the soil to a depth of 6 to 8 inches with a shovel. Break the soil up into smaller, finer pieces. Remove large rocks from the soil.
- 3). Spread peat moss or compost over the planting site to a depth of 2 to 4 inches. Mix this organic material into the soil with your shovel. This enriches the soil and increases its moisture retaining properties. Ginger lilies thrive in boggy soil. Rake the soil level.
- 4). Dig a hole that is the size of the rhizome plus 1 inch deeper with a hand trowel. Lay the root into the hole and cover with soil. Gently pat the soil in place.
- 5). Plant the rest of your ginger lily bulbs 12 to 24 inches apart. Water the area thoroughly by flooding it with water.
