How to Clean a Steel Chain

    • 1). Place a steel chain into an empty potato sack.

    • 2). Fill a potato sack with sand 3/4 of the way full. Knot the sack shut with twine.

    • 3). Pitch the sack between two people. Tossing the sack back and forth creates intense friction between the chain and the sand. The friction enables the sand grit to brush hard against the steel surface and remove dirt and grime. Check the chain for cleanliness every five minutes. Continue until the chain is clean.

    • 4). Remove the chain from the sack. Place one full layer of oil drenched towels atop the chain and hang the chain in a dry, ventilated area. Oil coats the chain surface and the cloth protects it from dirt and grime that can shift through the air.
