How to Make a Hut Out of Palm Fronds
- 1). Cut eight bamboo poles to 9 1/2 feet long; this will equal the highest point in the hut. Cut eight bamboo poles to 7 1/2 feet long; this will equal the lowest point in the hut. Cut 12 poles, two of each length, at varying lengths between the longest pole length and the shortest pole length. Cut 16 poles of 8 feet each for the roof supports. Cut 28 poles of 8 feet each for the walls.
- 2). Dig 28 evenly spaced holes, about a foot apart and 12 to 14 inches deep to create the square perimeter of the structure. If it is to be a temporary hut, the holes can be more shallow.
- 3). Insert all of the 9 1/2-foot poles into the front end of the square and all of the 7 1/2-foot poles into the back end of the square. Insert remaining poles in the sides of square from lowest at the back to highest at the front on both sides. Place bamboo pieces upright in holes and fill dirt around the base to secure them so they will not fall over.
- 4). Weave seven of the 8-foot bamboo poles on each side horizontally through the upright pieces, spaced a foot vertically apart, and secure with twine. They should form a pattern of squares that are about 1 square foot each. Be sure to leave an opening on one side for a door.
- 5). Weave 16 of the 8 foot-poles in the same 1 square foot pattern as the sides and secure with twine. Place the structure on top of the hut and secure with twine. This creates the support on which to build the palm frond roof.
- 6). Layer palm fronds in rows on the roof supports, from the lowest end to the highest end for rain proofing. Secure the fronds with twine to the roof supports.
