How to Use Confederate Jasmine As Privacy
- 1). Measure the area requiring a privacy barrier to determine how many plants are needed. One confederate jasmine plant is needed for every 8 feet the barrier extends.
- 2). Choose an appropriate structure to plant the confederate jasmine against. Latticework trellises measuring at least 10 feet in height and 6 feet in width work best because they provide ample footing for the vine to spread.
- 3). Anchor the trellis in the appropriate spot. Allow for 3 inches of space between the trellis and any preexisting structures such as railings, decks and walls.
- 4). Prepare a bed 3 inches from the base of the trellis. It must measure 2 feet wide and extend the length of the trellis. Apply a 5-inch layer of compost to the surface of the bed and cultivate the soil to a depth of 1 foot.
- 5). Plant the confederate jasmine with at least 6 feet between each plant. Gently firm the soil and water them to a depth of 2 inches.
- 6). Gently weave the longest branches upward through the latticework in a fan-shaped pattern. Secure the tendrils to the trellis using a loosely knotted twist tie. Do not apply the tie too tightly or it will damage the vine.
- 7). Allow confederate jasmine to grow undisturbed until 1 to 2 feet of growth appears. Rearrange and redistribute the tendrils across the trellis until it is satisfactorily covered.
- 8). Prune away any excessively long vines from along the top and sides of the trellis to maintain a manicured look, or allow the tendrils to billow down the far side, according to your preferences.
