Plants added to the garden in celebration of their beautiful blooming flowers bring color and visual impact to your home. Whether your gardening space provides an abundance of sunshine or shadier conditions, aesthetically pleasing options in a vast array of hues will suit your particular needs. Look for flowers with interesting shapes or the added benefit of fragrance for blossoms that smell as beautiful as they look.

    Tuberous Begonias

    • Tuberous begonias (Begonia x tuberhybrida) are prized in the home garden for their beautiful single or double blossoms and the breadth of potential display. Petal borders are smooth or textured with a toothed appearance or a ruffled form. Color options are vast, including yellow, orange, white, pink and salmon. These tubers, or plants similar to bulbs, thrive in partially shaded conditions and prefer well-drained soil, according to the University of Minnesota Extension Service. In trailing or upright varieties, stem lengths measure 12 to 18 inches. Begonias planted during February bloom during June.

    Easter Lilies

    • Easter lilies (Lilium longiflorum) are a staple of the Easter holiday as their name suggests. These flowers are grown from bulbs and are prized for their beautiful white blossoms that resemble the flared shape of a trumpet, according to the Texas AgriLife Extension Service. Easter lilies perform best in locations that offer full sunlight and are well suited for use as indoor plants. Ideal indoor temperature ranges from 60 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit during daytime hours and a few degrees lower during nighttime. Though Easter lilies need full sunlight, extreme sun may result in injury, so choose locations with indirect exposure when possible. These flowers naturally bloom during July and August, though they are typically forced into earlier bloom for Easter, according to the University of Illinois Extension. For most successful growth, Easter lilies prefer moist, well-drained soil. Height ranges from 18 inches to 3 feet.

    Sweet Williams

    • Sweet Williams (Dianthus barbatus) are old-fashioned perennial or biennial plants chosen for their beautiful blooming flowers as well as for the sweet scent many of the blossoms produce as the name implies. In single and double form, Sweet Williams is a favorite as a border plant, according to the Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service. Reaching a height of 5 inches to 2 feet, these flowers display clusters of red, pink and white hues from May through June. Sweet Williams flowers thrive in full sunlight and prefer well-drained soil with a slightly alkaline pH, according to the University of Nebraska Lincoln Extension Horticulture.
