How to Install 2-Tiered Pond Pumps

    • 1). Select a pump strong enough to pump up to the height of the highest waterfall tier. A 1,500-gallon-per-hour pump will work on a waterfall up to 15 feet high in a 2,000-gallon pond, but it's usually better to have an excess of power. Because your pond has two tiers, small pumps will not be able to elevate the water high enough, or with enough volume, to create a cascade.

    • 2). Rinse the plastic foam filter material, compressing and releasing it half a dozen times to get out any foreign material, before installing it in the pump pre-filter basket. How you install the filter in the basket will vary by manufacturer, but it usually involves fitting the filter into the open weave filter basket. Follow the maker's instructions.

    • 3). Attach a 1/2-inch T-fitting to the pump's output pipe. Align the fitting so that one opening faces upward.

    • 4). Cut a tube long enough to fit from the filter box to the pump. Slip one end of the tube over the output of the filter box. Push the other end of the tubing over the input on the pond pump.

    • 5). Attach the hard plastic riser tube to the upward-pointing opening of the T-fitting. At the top of the riser tube, attach the fountain head.

    • 6). Attach a 1/2-inch tube that is long enough to reach the top of the water fountain to the other opening on the T-fitting.

    • 7). Place an 8-inch-by-8-inch-by-8-inch cement block in the center of the pond and place the pump on top of the block. Adjust the fountainhead so it's sticking the desired distance above the surface of the water. Most riser tubes adjust by sliding one tube inside another.

    • 8). Run the long tube from the T-fitting to the top of your waterfall. Depending on the construction of your waterfall, there may be an input nipple at the bottom of the fountain to attach the tubing to. Alternatively, there may be a hole running from the bottom of the fountain to the top that you must push the tubing into. Otherwise, run the tubing to the top of the fountain and secure it in place using the method recommended by the manufacturer.

    • 9). Plug the pump into a GFCI outlet.
