If you are short on gardening space, consider growing dwarf fruit trees. Choose from many varieties, including citrus, tropical fruits, and common stone fruits. Dwarf fruit trees average up to 15 feet in height at maturity, making them well-suited for small landscapes or containers. Many of these fruit trees grow quite well in partial sun conditions. Dwarf tree species are either naturally dwarfed or have been grafted onto rootstocks that maintain their smallish nature.

Meyer lemon (Citrus meyeri), also called Chinese dwarf lemon, is a naturally occurring dwarf variety of citrus tree. Mature trees average 6 to 10 feet tall, with shorter container-grown plants. The tree works well as a houseplant, or planted in the ground in USDA planting zones 8B through 10. Rather cold hardy for a citrus tree, Meyer lemon trees tolerate temperatures to 23 degrees Fahrenheit.

Trees bloom and fruit year-round, giving a constant supply of fruits. White blossoms tinged in pink are very fragrant. Vibrant yellow, 3-inch fruits follow the blossoms and trees usually start producing an abundance of lemons in one to two years. Grow the tree in full to partial sun in well-draining soils. Trees require weekly watering, especially during spring and summer.

Cavendish bananas (Musa cavendishii "Dwarf Cavendish") grow 4 to 7 feet tall at maturity and are well-suited for containers or for use as a houseplant. The Dwarf Cavendish grows well planted in the ground in USDA planting zones 8 through 11 and is cold hardier than many banana cultivars.

Plants are stocky with broad leaves, producing medium-sized, flavorful bananas usually within its first year. Dwarf Cavendish grows well outdoors in partial to full sun. Situate indoor plants in an area receiving high amounts of sunlight. Grow the banana in a rich, well-draining soil medium and water regularly to keep the soil moist.

Scarlet Prince (Prunis persica) is a dwarf peach tree averaging 10 to 15 feet tall at maturity, making it suitable for small landscapes or containers. The tree grows well planted outdoors in USDA planting zones 5 through 8, and prefers full to partial sunlight in rich, well-draining soil mediums.

Fragrant, pink flowers bloom in springtime, followed by sweet, reddish peaches that are ripe and ready for picking in June. The tree flowers and grows best when given regular, weekly applications of water.
