How to Repot Green Fig Plants With New Roots
- 1). Wait until winter or very early spring to transplant the fig plant. Spring and summer is when the fig grows new roots and transplanting fig trees during this time can kill it.
- 2). Insert a spade into soil around the edge of the pot to loosen the soil. If the pot is plastic, use a knife to cut down the side of the pot to easily remove the plant.
- 3). Remove the spade and reinsert it 4 inches to the left of the first location. Continue loosening the soil around the plant until you have worked your way around the entire plant.
- 4). Fill a new container 1 to 2 inches full with a layer of pebbles. Choose a container that is twice the size of the plant's root ball to provide adequate space for the plant to grow.
- 5). Pour potting soil into the pot until it is approximately 3/4 full. Create an indention in the center of the pot by pushing the soil up against the sides of the pot.
- 6). Use your hands to pick up the fig plant from the old pot and move it to the new pot.
- 7). Insert the fig plant into the new pot and cover with the surrounding soil. Add additional soil to the top of the plant if necessary to cover all plant roots.
- 8). Water the fig plant with water until the soil is moist, but not soggy.
