Trimming Sun Flowers

    • 1). Prune dead blooms. The smaller sunflower variety produces several blooms. When they begin to fade, prune them with sharp shears to allow the others to flourish.

    • 2). Cut giant sunflowers to the ground. When the large blossom of a giant sunflower dies and the birds have had their fill of the seeds, cut down the whole stalk. Giant sunflowers can grow more than 10 feet tall and the stalks can be 2 inches in diameter. Pruning shears won't do the trick, so use a small saw or even a machete to chop them down.

    • 3). Cut down the least healthy of a group of sunflowers. If one or two begin to lean against the others, it's a good idea to take them down so the weight doesn't topple the healthier ones. Sunflowerguide.com recommends keeping the head and relocating it next to a bird feeder where it can still be of some use.
