How to Pick Out a Grow Light
- 1). Research whether your plants prefer sunlight, partial sunlight or shade. If your plants prefer full sunlight, they need a grow light with a high ultraviolet output -- the 5000k to 6500k range is best for green plant growth. On the other hand, if your plant grows best in the shade, it will require less artificial light or even none at all.
- 2). Select an incandescent light for shade-loving plants. These lights are used primarily as spotlights and have a low ultraviolet output. Keep the plants a good distance from these lights as incandescent bulbs get hot. If you prefer, setting shade-loving plants in front of a window usually provides enough light for them.
- 3). Choose a full-spectrum florescent tube if you are growing sun-loving plants such as cactus, African violets or succulents. These lights are energy efficient and can last up to 20,000 hours. They have a high, red light output, which promotes flowering.
- 4). Purchase an LED grow light for plants that enjoy partial sun. Do not use an LED light to display plants, as it tends to cast an unflattering lighting color. LED lights do not get hot, so it is safe to have them close to plants.
