How to Put Bromine in a Pool

    Testing

    • 1). Dip a bromine test strip into the pool water at the depth specified by the product label, usually 18 inches.

    • 2). Hold the test strip out of the water for the amount of time specified by the product label.

    • 3). Compare the test strip to the color chart on the bottle to find out if the bromine levels are high, low or in the correct range. The ideal bromine reading is 2.5 to 4.0 ppm. Add bromine if the level is just under 2.5. Do not let the level drop below the industry-established minimum of 2.0 because you will begin to experience water chemistry problems below that point.

    • 4). Test the water three or four times per week under normal conditions or daily during extremely hot or humid weather, after heavy use or when you see signs of trouble, such as murky water.

    Adding Bromine

    • 1). Place a bromine tablet into the automatic chemical feeder, known as a "brominator."

    • 2). Leave the lid off the brominator and turn the chlorinator on low until the tube has almost filled with water to eliminate air from the tube, if your particular unit requires it. Ask a pool professional if you don't know whether this step is required.

    • 3). Put the lid back on the brominator.
