How to Keep a Baby Mimosa Tree Alive Indoors
- 1). Place the baby mimosa tree in an indoor location that receives plenty of bright light, but not direct sun, which will burn the leaves or kill the tree.
- 2). Water the baby mimosa tree once or twice per week until the soil is damp all the way to the bottom of the pot. Allow the top of the soil to dry out before adding more water, which varies based on indoor humidity levels. In the winter months, reduce watering to only when the soil feels dry to the touch to a depth of 2 inches. If the baby mimosa still has very shallow roots in winter, watch it to ensure it does not wilt and add water if it does.
- 3). Apply a liquid houseplant fertilizer once per month from the early spring through mid to late fall. Use the amount of fertilizer specified on the bottle for the size of the pot, not per plant, since the tree is so small. Stop fertilizing once winter arrives.
- 4). Examine the leaves of the baby mimosa regularly for spider mites and whiteflies, to which they are most susceptible. If these insects develop, move the mimosa to an outdoor location and spray it with an insecticide until saturated. Leave it outdoors if the weather is warm until no pests are seen. If it is cold, move the tree back indoors to a protected location.
- 5). Remove the baby mimosa from the pot once per year and place it in pot one size larger then the previous one. Mix in 25 percent manure or compost with potting soil, and fill the pot half full. Insert the baby mimosa into the pot and add additional soil mixture until you reach the top of the mimosa root-ball.
