How to Take Care of Chinese Elm Hedges
- 1). Decide on the growth limits of your hedge. Allowing your Chinese elm hedge to get out of control can make future pruning more of a problem.
- 2). Use hedge trimmers or clippers to trim the sides of the hedge, angling inward toward the top of the hedge. This will allow sunlight to reach the bottom of your hedge.
- 3). Prune the hedge flat on top to make the frequent pruning required by this type of hedge easier. Step back frequently to make sure you are pruning the top level.
- 4). Watch for quick, spindly growth on the hedge. During the growing season, this growth happens so quickly that you may need to prune the hedge every week or two to maintain a well manicured look.
