      Flowering cherry trees are a fruit-bearing ornamentals, but they are grown for their brilliant spring display and form. Grown in a wide range of shapes, sizes and bloom colors, flowering cherry trees are often used as a specimen tree or grown in groupings around the garden and lining streets. The foliage on cherry trees changes in fall to create a burst of color to the garden and the white to pink flowers color the landscape.

    Sargent Cherry (Prunus sargentii)

    • Sargent cherry (Prunus sargentii) is a flowering cherry tree that grows 20 to 30 feet tall and wide and features many spring-blooming flowers and summer foliage. The pink flowers on sargent cherry trees appear in clusters of two to four in spring and are followed by the dark purple to black cherries. The small fruit on sargent cherry trees are bitter but enjoyed by birds. Sargent cherry trees feature glossy, dark-green foliage that grows up to 5-inches long. It is elliptic to oblong in shape and features serrated margins. Foliage on sargent cherry emerges in spring in a bronze hue to turn brilliant shades of red in fall. It grows best in full sun to part shade and well-drained soil. Grow sargent cherry in United States Department of Agriculture Plant Hardiness Zones 4 to 7.

    Higan Cherry (Prunus subhirtella)

    • Higan cherry (Prunus subhirtella) is a deciduous cherry tree with a moderate growth rate and upright, spreading form. It is "one of the longest lived cherries," according to the North Carolina State University Extension website. Higan cherry trees grow 20- to 40-feet tall and 15- to 30-feet wide and bears white to pink flowers. The ½-inch wide flowers on higan cherry trees emerge in early spring and the 1- to 4-inch wide foliage casts a yellow tinge in fall. Higan cherry trees grow best in full sun and well-drained, moist soil, although tolerates clay soils and heat. Grow higan cherries in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 4 to 8.

    Yoshino Cherry (Prunus x yedoensis)

    • Yoshino cherry (Prunus x yedoensis) is a rapidly growing cherry tree variety with a soft, rounded habit and arching spread. It grows 30- to 40-feet tall and up to 50-feet wide and features clusters of pale pink-to-white flowers that appear in spring. The slightly fragrant flowers on yoshino cherry trees are followed by the small, black fruit that appears in summer. Yoshino cherry trees bear leaves that grow 2-½ to 4-½ inches wide and cast a yellow-to-gold hue in fall. They grow best in full sun to light shade and well-drained, moist soil. They also have the ability to tolerate clay soils. Grow yoshino cherry in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 5 to 8.
