How to Care for a Medjool Palm Tree
- 1). Dig a planting hole 3 feet wide by 3 feet deep in spring or fall. Situate your Medjool palm tree at least 15 feet from power lines and buildings in a sunny area that has well drained sandy to clay soil.
- 2). Enrich sandy and clay soil to improve drainage and fertility by mixing one part organic compost with every four parts of native soil.
- 3). Set your tree into its planting hole and fill with the native soil and compost mixture. After planting, dig an irrigation trench or ditch about 2 or 3 feet from the trunk and encircling it.
- 4). Water your tree by flooding the irrigation ditch periodically: commercial growers in Africa and the Middle East flood their trees 15 to 40 times each year.
- 5). Fertilize your Medjool palm tree once each year with well-rotted animal manure. In Iraq, growers use 44 lbs. of manure for each tree. This tree will respond well to commercial fertilizers as well.
- 6). Control insects that can eat ripening dates with commercial insecticides if the problem is severe. If birds or other animals such as lizards are present, net your tree when fruit is forming.
