    • 1). Unplug all cables from the PowerMac G4. Place the bath towel on the floor. Rotate the G4 so that the side panel with the Apple logo is facing the bath towel. Lift up on the latch above the Apple logo to release the side panel. Pull the side panel down onto the bath towel.

    • 2). Locate the metal heat sink with the grooved top near the center of the side panel. Release any plastic tabs from the sides of the metal heat sink using the tip of the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver. Remove any screws in the center of the metal heat sink with the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver. Pull the metal heat sink up and off the side panel.

    • 3). Grab the sides of the CPU with your fingers. Lift the CPU straight up and out of the AGP processing slot that is on the side panel. Dispose of the CPU properly. (You can turn it in at an Apple retailer.)

    • 4). Remove the replacement CPU from its protective bag. Remove the protective sticker paper covering the CPU chip with your fingers.

    • 5). Hold the replacement CPU by the sides with the pins facing down. Place the replacement CPU into the AGP processing slot in the same position as was occupied by the original CPU. Push down on the replacement CPU to seat it inside of the AGP processing slot.

    • 6). Place the metal heat sink over the replacement CPU in the position it formerly occupied. Reattach any screws and re-engage any plastic tabs.

    • 7). Lift the side panel back up on the G4. Pull the latch back down. Rotate the G4 back to its original position. Reattach all of the cables. Put the bath towel away.
