How to Use Heat Tape to Protect Plants During Frost in Florida

    • 1). Lay the heat tape in the soil around the plants you want to protect from frost. Space the lengths of heat tape about six inches from each other and cover them with a light layer of soil. Do not allow one length of heat tape to cross over another, as it could be a fire hazard.

    • 2). Wrap the heat tape around any plant pots in a spiral motion, starting at the bottom of the pot and working toward the top. Use duct tape to keep the heat tape in place.

    • 3). Plug the heat tape into a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlet. Unplug the heat tape when the danger of frost is over.
