    • 1). Open the "/etc/mail/spamassassin/local.cf" file in any text editor. Red Hat and Debian users will find this file at "/etc/spamassassin/local.cf." This file contains the configuration directives for SpamAssassin.

    • 2). Turn on any configuration options by placing a "1" after the option. Turn off any options by placing a "0" after the option. If you turn on the "use_bayes" option, make sure the path to the bayes file is correct.

    • 3). Increase or decrease the scores in the "## Optional Score Increases" section as necessary.

    • 4). Save and close the "local.cf" file.

    • 5). Verify the configuration with the "spamassassin --debug --lint" command.
