    The Half Knot

    • The half knot is characterized by having a circular shape. This is widely used in bracelet making and in other pieces of jewelry. With some simple twisting of cords, you can easily create it. You will need to assemble a line of anchor cords with knotting cords on their ends. Take the left knotting cord and bring it over each anchor cord piece and then bring it under the knotting cord on the right. After doing so, the cord should be in the shape of an L. Next, take the right cord and bring it under all anchor cords and then up inside the L shape's nook. Pull both knotting cords to tighten the knot. This will invert your knotting cords (the left now becomes the right). Hold the knotting cord in the right hand and the other cord with your left hand. Simply repeat the process until the cords form twists.

    The Square Knot

    • The square knot, as its name suggests, has a square shape and can be done by just a few simple steps. Again you will need a line of anchor cords with knotting cords on both ends. Take the left cord and bring it over each anchor cord and then below the right cord (same as the half knot). You will again form an L shape. Next, bring this right cord below each anchor cord, then up inside the L shape's nook. Pull both knotting cords to tighten the knot. Expect knotting cords to change positions. Take your new right knotting cord and take it over all anchor cords and then under the new left knotting cord. It is still the same process but this time, the left has become the right and vice versa. Take the left knotting cord under all anchor cords and up inside the L's nook. Tighten the knot by pulling both knotting cords. The two knots will form the square knot. Basically, a square knot is just two half knots put together.

How to Make a Basic Macrame Bracelet

    • You will need six yards of #20 hemp in any color of your choice, assorted beads and masking tape. Cut your hemp into half to make 3 yard lengths. Fold them 18 inches from their ends. Put together the folded strands. Tie them to form a knot that is 4 inches away from the fold you've made. Tape them to a table to secure them in place. You will have 4 strands taped to your table ready to be knotted. Refer to them as strands 1, 2, 3 and 4. Bring 1 over 2 and 3 and then under 4. Strand 4 goes under 2 and 3 and then up inside 1's loop. Tighten the knot. Bring 1 over 2 and 3 and then under 4. Bring 4 under 2 and 3 and then up inside 1's loop. Tighten the knot. You may add your beads anytime during the process. You can string a bead or two on any or all of the 4 strands. Once you've reached the bracelet length you want, tie a knot to match the first one you made. Remove the masking tape and trim the strands' ends to even them out. You can add more knots to secure the ends.
