    • 1). Keep the soil slightly moist at all times. You may need to water more often in the heat of the summer, so check the soil periodically. If the plant begins to wilt, water it.

    • 2). Fertilize the hydrangea in April and again in June with 16-4-8 or 12-4-8 formula, at 1/4 pound per 100 square feet. Sprinkle the fertilizer over the soil, keeping it 6 inches from the base of the Hydrangea paniculata Grandiflora, and spread it 1 foot beyond the plant's widest point. Water after application, until the top 4 inches of soil is moist.

    • 3). Prune the Hydrangea paniculata Grandiflora in the spring, fall or winter. Begin pruning the hydrangea by cutting out any branches that are crossing over others and any dead branches. After that, prune it to the shape you desire. H. paniculata Grandiflora blooms on new wood so you don't have to worry about removing potential flowers as long as you don't prune in the summer.

    • 4). Provide a 3-foot clearance around the hydrangea. Grandiflora, like all hydrangeas, requires air circulation to avoid fungal disease.
