How to Build a Fountain on Your Deck

    • 1). Determine the best spot on your deck to place the fountain. This is a vital first step because once the fountain is filled and working, you will not be able to move it easily. Position the fountain out of direct sunlight in a spot where people can enjoy it but it is not in the way. Make sure it is near an electrical outlet.

    • 2). Place a large container on your deck to act as the water reservoir. This container can be watertight, but it doesn't have to be; if it is not, you'll need a pond liner. Some good options include rubber tubs, large flower pots and planters, old barrels cut in half, and even wooden boxes and crates with solid sides.

    • 3). If the container is not water-tight, use the pond liner. First, flatten the pond liner on the bottom of the container. Then press it against all sides, folding it carefully at corners and around curves to make it as flat as possible. Use the staple gun and appropriate staples to attach the liner just under the rim of the container. If you cannot staple the material, use water-grade sealant adhesive applied liberally between the liner and the container to hold it in place. Trim any excess liner off neatly.

    • 4). Place two bricks or flat stones at the bottom of the water container. These hold the fountain pump off the bottom of the container to reduce the chance that debris will get into the mechanism. Choose the height and width based on the size of the container and the length of the pump tube, which needs to reach the top of the water.

    • 5). Lower the submersible fountain pump onto the bricks or flat rocks. Position it carefully so it will not tip over. Attach the solid fountain tube to the pump and make sure it is pointing straight up. It should be straight if you place the pump flat on the bottom, but you can use a level to make sure. Run the electrical cord up and out of the water container and toward the outlet you plan to use.

    • 6). Attach your water pump fountain head to the top of the rigid tube coming out of the pump. Fountain heads for pond pumps come in many varieties. Be sure to use one that makes a fountain of an appropriate size for your container.

    • 7). Fill the entire water garden container with water from your garden hose. Fill it to just under the rim at the top, or just under the lip of the pond liner for non-watertight reservoirs. Wait a few minutes to give water time to flow into all the parts of the submersible pond pump before turning it on. Then plug the pump in and turn it on. Adjust the fountain as you please, sit back, and enjoy the fountain on your deck.
