How to Relocate Daffodil Bulbs
- 1). Loosen the soil around the bulbs of the plant either with a pitchfork or a shovel. In order to prevent damaging the bulbs, dig into the soil eight to 10 inches from the bulbs, using a rocking motion with your tool to loosen the soil.
- 2). Pull gently on the exposed stems in an upward direction, slowly freeing the bulbs from the soil. Shake off the excess dirt and place the daffodil bulbs in the bucket. Repeat this step until all bulbs are freed from the soil.
- 3). Wrap the bulbs loosely with newspaper to allow them to dry out if they are not going to be replanted until the fall season. Once the bulbs have dried for several days, store them in a hanging net bag. The net bag allows air to circulate around the bulbs, preventing them from rotting.
- 4). Determine the location for planting the bulbs and select which bulbs to plant when you are ready to replant them. Typically, larger daffodil bulbs will produce larger plants than smaller bulbs during the next growing season.
- 5). Plant the daffodil bulbs, making sure to leave adequate space for the bulbs to divide themselves naturally underground for several years. Typically an 8- to 10-inch interval between bulbs is sufficient. Dig a hole that is at least 2 inches deeper than the height of the bulb. Be sure to plant the bulb so that it is with the top facing upward. Water the surrounding area.
- 6). Place mulch over the planted bulbs as a protective covering through the winter months.
