How to Light Around a Garden Pond
- 1). Choose solar lighting that can be used in or near water.
- 2). Place the lights in coffee cans or plastic glasses filled with gravel. This way, you can place them around your yard without having to install them, yet. Put them in direct sunlight for at least eight hours, to charge the batteries.
- 3). Put the lights (now in cans or cups) around the perimeter of the pond, at different distances from the pond and each other. Direct a few lights to shine into the water, a few to reflect off rocks and a few to up-light nearby plantings. This variety is more esthetically pleasing than marching the lights around the pond, like pearls on a necklace.
- 4). Wait until dark. Study your lighting from a few different vantage points. Determine whether or not the lights work well where they are placed. If not, move the lights around, until you reach the effect you desire.
- 5). Dig a hole where each light is to be placed. The hole should be as long and wide as the light base.
- 6). Place the light base in the hole and replace the dirt. You might want to place a few rocks around the exposed part of the base, to keep it upright. Water carefully around the base of the lights, to settle the dirt. When the dirt dries, it will keep the light in place.
