How to Explore the Rogue-Umpqua Scenic Byway
- 1). Check out the attractions in Roseburg, Oregon. This city is on the Historic Applegate Trail. Explore the history of this area at the history museum in Roseburg and visit the winery there. The byway goes to the east, from here, to rural areas located on Oregon Route 138.
- 2). Stop at the Colliding Rivers Point, located in Glide, Oregon. Follow the North Umpqua River as it runs away with the byway. Locate the great spots for fly-fishing and whitewater rafting. Go for a hike on the North Umpqua Trail. The North Umpqua Trail is 77 miles long. The tree-shaded road travels by the Swiftwater Park, the Toketee Reservoir and Old Man Rock. See the many waterfalls, like the 272-foot Watson Falls. Watch for the wildflowers or immerse yourself in the beautiful trees.
- 3). Visit Lemolo Lake, a fishing haven. Boating and camping spots are also offered. Also nearby on Route 138 is Diamond Lake, a gem between Mount Bailey and Mount Thielsen. This lake has amenities such as a lodging resort, a marina and horse stables that offer riding tours. Bike around the lake on the bike path, or cross-country ski around it in the winter months. Snowcat skiing and ice skating are other options at Mount Bailey. Route 138 starts to go south and then east as it nears a north entrance to the Crater Lake Park area. This byway then turns west on Route 230, and offers a clear view of the Crater Lake rims.
- 4). Take Route 230 beginning at the Rogue River and merge with Route 62 near Union Creek. Stop at the two Rogue Gorge interpretive sites. Watch the river as it thunders deep into narrow channels. Find several camping sites beneath the trees between here and Prospect, Oregon. The Lost Creek Lake offers recreational opportunities, like Stewart State Park. Further on, the Shady Cove is made for anglers and rafters.
- 5). Stay on this Scenic Byway as it changes directions again and goes west on Route 234. Pass Table Rocks and see the Rogue River again at Gold Hill, where the byway ends. The byway is 172 miles long, whichever way, and it will usually take 6 to 8 hours to pass through.
