How to Respool a Fishing Line

    • 1). Prepare the storage spool by wiping it clean with a dry rag and attaching a 2 inch piece of ferrule cement to serve as a handle. Heat one end of a ferrule cement stick–a ferrule cement stick is used to attach ferrules and tip-tops to fishing rods–with a lighter or match and attach it to the outside of the storage spool, along the outer rim. The glue will dry very quickly so know where you want to attach the glue stick before you heat it.

    • 2). Run the fishing line out from the reel attached to the rod, through the line guides and tie the running end to the storage spool. Set the reel drag to a level sufficient to apply about one pound of resistance–a very light drag setting.

    • 3). Place the fishing rod and reel combination on the ground directly in front of you. Place the storage spool, with the running end of the fishing line attached, on the 1/4 inch dowel and hold this dowel in your weak hand, checking to make sure the spool will turn without obstruction–use your dominate hand for turning.

    • 4). Use the ferrule cement stick as a handle and begin to wind the fishing line onto the spool as you pull it from the reel attached to the rod. Guide the fishing line onto the spool with your fingers in a manner that eliminates twisting, knots or bunching.

    • 5). Tape down the end of the fishing line when it is completely respooled and remove the ferrule glue stick from the spool. Mark the spool with the date and the test strength of the line.
