Flounder Fishing in Washington State
- Before you cast your line for flounder, apply for a license. Individuals 15 years old and older require a state license for both saltwater and freshwater fishing. Obtain the document online, or at one of the 600 dealers in the state. There are no seasonal restrictions. Anglers can fish for flounder year round.
- According to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, you may fish for starry flounder from private docks or a public pier. The protected bays are another option. Fishing enthusiasts frequent the Puget Sound region to angle for these flatfish. Flounder generally lurk above sand or muddy bottom water and congregate in small groups.
- Known primarily as game fish, arrowtooth flounder are common to Washington waters. Arrowtooth are relatively large and sometimes weigh more than 15 pounds. Typically not recommended for consumption, the flesh of an arrowtooth turns a mushy texture when cooked.
