How to Build Tree Rings
- 1). Figure out how large a radius from the tree you want the tree ring to be. Take into account how large the tree is projected to grow and how shallow the roots are.
- 2). Tie one end of the string loosely around the trunk of the tree and then mark the distance of the radius. Make a second mark that is the width of the stones plus 1 inch from the first mark.
- 3). Mark two circles on the ground around the tree with the spray paint using the two marks on the string as your guide.
- 4). Remove any turf or plants between the circles, and then use a shovel to dig 3 to 6 inches into the ground. Tamp the ground with the plate compacter.
- 5). Add a 2-inch layer of sand or gravel, and tamp it level with the compacter.
- 6). Build the first level of your stone wall. You may need to use the mallet to pound the stone into the sand or gravel so the stones lie flat next to each other.
- 7). Add at least one more layer of stone. Make sure to alternate the joints so there are no continuous seams between stones. No mortar is required.
