    • Tree peonies (Paeonia suffruticosa) are deciduous shrubs that produce large showy flowers. They require 4 to 6 hours of direct sun or dappled sun all day. Tree peonies like rich, well-drained soil and protection from strong winds. They produce an abundance of fragrant flowers in early spring and with proper conditions can live for over 50 years. There are numerous varieties of tree peonies available in a wide range of colors.

    • The Luster of Jade- Jing Yu variety produce 7-inch white double flowers that have a touch of pink in the center. This variety has a vibrant rich fragrance and reaches 3 feet tall and 3 feet wide. The flowers grow upright on long slender stalks.

    Shima Daijin

    • The Shima Daijin is one of the most famous varieties of Japanese peonies. The semi-double blooms are very large and are dark red in color. This variety grows to about 48 inches and blooms in early spring.

    Floral Rivalry

    • The Floral Rivalry produces a 7- to 8-inch semi-double light pink flower. The flower is a bit deeper at the base leading out to a soft pink edge. This variety offers a sweet scent and grows to about 48 inches.

    Seven Gods of Good Fortune

    • The Seven Gods of Good Fortune variety produces enormous 8-inch flowers that bloom much like a rose and offer a light spicy scent. The color begins in the center as rose-pink and spreads into a frosty silver edge for an exciting two-tone effect.

    Black Dragon Holds a Splendid Flower

    • The Black Dragon Holds a Splendid Flower is an excellent choice for a beginning enthusiast. The flowers are large and showy and the plant itself is fast growing. The 8-inch flowers are dark red with a hint of lighter color in the center; they produce a delightfully sweet fragrance. These tree peonies can grow to 5 feet tall and 4 feet wide.

    Souvenir de Maxime Cornu

    • The Souvenir de Maxime Cornu was developed over 100 years ago. This variety produces 8- to 10-inch double rose blooms that are a soft shade of yellow with pink tips. These flowers tend to hide inside the plant, so they are best enjoyed indoors as cut flowers. The plant grows 3 to 4 feet tall and provides a delicate lemony scent.

    Alice Harding

    • The Alice Harding variety is a miniature tree peony that grows to about 30 inches tall. The bright yellow flowers produce a light lemon scent and grow downwards or to the side. This variety grows well in a container garden. The Alice Harding is historically important as it is one of the parent plants used to create yellow inter-sectional peonies.
