How to Replace a Compaq Presario Hard Drive
- 1). Shut down your computer and remove the power cord from the back of the unit. Remove the retaining screws that hold the case in place. These retaining screws are typically located at the back of the unit, with one screw at each corner.
- 2). Slide the cover off of the computer and set it aside. Locate the hard drive inside the case. For small form factor Compaq Presario computers, the hard drive is on the right-hand side at the top of the case. For tower Presario computers, the hard drive is located near the top of the unit.
- 3). Remove the cable from the back of the hard drive. The drive cable is gray in color and flat, with a black rectangular connection that slides onto the pins on the back of the drive.
- 4). Disconnect the power connector from the back of the hard drive. The power connector is small, white and rectangular, with four small holes that fit over the pins on the back of the hard drive.
- 5). Remove the screws that hold the hard drive in place and carefully remove the hard drive. Slide the new hard drive in place and fasten it with the same screws.
- 6). Connect the black connector on the gray ribbon cable to the connectors on the back of the hard drive. Connect the white power connector to the pins on the back of the hard drive.
