How to Draw Horses Step by Step
- 1). Draw a rectangle large enough for the legs and back of the horse, with the shorter ends at the top and bottom. The size of the rectangle will determine the leg and body proportions of the horse. For a pony with short legs, make the rectangle wider and shorter. For a leggy racehorse, make the rectangle taller. Position the rectangle toward the right side of the paper to leave room on the left for the head and neck.
- 2). Draw two ovals. Position the first oval horizontally in the top left corner of the rectangle to represent the barrel of the horse's chest. It should take up a little over half of the width of the rectangle. Position the second oval in the top right corner of the rectangle to represent the horse's hindquarters. It should take up the rest of the top of the rectangle, with a short side at the top, sloping down and right. It's okay if these ovals go outside the rectangle.
- 3). Draw a triangle to represent the horse's neck. The base of the triangle should overlap the oval representing the horse's chest. The tip of the triangle will be the top of the neck, where the head is attached.
- 4). Draw a circle for the cheek and top of the head at the tip of the triangle. Draw a square for the muzzle below the circle.
- 5). Draw two straight lines for the front legs, starting at the oval representing the horse's chest and ending approximately three-quarters of the way down to the bottom of the rectangle. Draw two bent lines for the back legs, starting at the oval representing the hindquarters and ending about three-quarters of the way down to the bottom of the rectangle. The lines for the back legs should angle back, toward the right side of the rectangle, then bend and continue straight down. The bend should occur approximately halfway down.
- 6). Draw small circles to represent the horse's knees and hocks (knee joints on the back leg). Draw small circles to represent the horse's fetlocks (ankles).
- 7). Draw short lines that slope forward from the fetlocks to the bottom of the rectangle. Draw small triangles for the hooves, with the bottom line parallel to the bottom of the rectangle, the right line straight up to the fetlock, and the left line sloping forward.
- 8). Add lines to complete the legs. Use a large inverted triangle for the upper part of the horse's back legs. Use straight lines for the rest. Draw lines connecting each side of each knee circle to the oval representing the horse's chest. Draw lines connecting each side of each knee and hock circle to the corresponding fetlock circle. Draw lines connecting the fetlock circles to the hooves.
- 9). Join the cheek circle for the horse's head to the square representing the horse's nose. Add triangular ears.
- 10
Draw a curved line joining the cheek circle to the neck triangle. Make the line curve in toward the neck triangle. Continue the line down the neck triangle, curving outward to make the neck a little curved and wider. Draw a line for the top of the neck, curving outward, to make the crest of the neck. - 11
Square off the horse's chest between the base of the neck and the top of the foreleg. Connect the chest and hindquarters, using lines that curve in a little bit. - 12
Add details to complete your drawing. Make the muzzle curved, with a bump for the chin. Use a circle with a right-angled roof to draw the eye. Add a straight line with a small downturn at the end for the mouth. Draw a curved line for the nostril. - 13
Complete the hooves by drawing short lines to cut off the back corners of the triangles. Draw a line to form the top of each hoof. - 14
Draw the mane and tail. - 15
Erase any visible construction lines. Make any corrections or additions you feel necessary.
