Last Sunday, I was watching a movie with my better half.
It was a good movie so I decided to tweet about it.
Within minutes my friends started replying to it and I simply got carried away.
After a while I looked up and I found my partner deeply annoyed.
This whole incident made me think, Can Social Media Ruin Your Relationships? Facebook, Twitter, Google + and Instagram, all these social media platforms help us keep in touch with our friends and family.
Similarly, social media platforms such as LinkedIn can offer career opportunities and connect you with like minded professionals online.
For businesses social media is a direct way to engage with their potential customers and increase their sales.
The uses of social media are infinite and it has become an essential part of our lives.
However, there comes a point where we need to set a balance between social media and our personal lives.
It's good to keep in touch with your friends and family who are far away, but is it getting in the way of spending some quality time with the people right there in front of you? I completely understand the urge of quickly Instagramming a picture of your delicious Lava Cake oozing with chocolate, but while you are at it, are you forgetting to interact with the person in front of you? Can Social Media Ruin Your Relationships Don't get lost in the Digital World!!! Here's What To Do and What Not To Do BE PRESENT - Your followers, fans, tweeps or friends can wait, take the time to enjoy the moment with people who are there at that time.
You can tweet about the good time you had later.
SCHEDULE YOUR UPDATES - Use a tool like Hootsuite.
It's a great tool to schedule an update.
You don't have to worry about manually posting your updates, Hootsuite will do that for you.
Now you can enjoy your time with your folks.
DESIGNATE A SPECIFIC TIME TO GO ONLINE - Have you been stalking that god awful person on Facebook and suddenly realized that you spent 2 hours on that? You will always find interesting things online which will make it so easy to spend hours browsing.
Don't forget to keep track of time, this will help you to focus on other tasks at hand without getting lost in a Digital Narnia.
FOCUS ON ONE THING AT A TIME - Multitasking is good, however don't get carried away chatting with your BFF who lives far far away and forget all about your friend whom you invited over.
Either excuse yourself and finish the chat with your BFF or ask for a good time to have a chat with them.
PUT IT AWAY - Finally, especially if you are a Social Media Marketer like me who spends your whole day online, don't forget to give yourself a small breather and put away your phone in the evening.
Social Media is the future of communication, there is no doubt about that.
However, you need to make room for the real life people around you.
After all, when bad times strike, 300+ people on your Facebook or your Tweeps won't be physically there to comfort you.
The choice is all yours - WOULD YOU LIKE A VIRTUAL HUG OR AN ACTUAL HUG?
