The Olea europaea L., also known as the olive tree, originated in the Mediterranean basin and grows in warm, sunny climates. They can grow to 30 feet in height and require only moderate amounts of water. Unprocessed olives are inedible, but unripe and ripe olives can both be processed. Processed ripe and unripe olives can be eaten. Ripe olives can also be pressed to extract the oil. - Ash trees are large deciduous trees.mountain ash image by Dianne Burridge from Fotolia.com
The Fraxinus L., or ash tree, has 22 species. Ash trees are large deciduous trees and common throughout the United States. Though popular for home landscapes, ash trees are susceptible to storm damage, which may cause the tree to become misshapen. Many insects also make their home in ash trees, including the ash borer. Ash borers can eventually kill the tree. - Forsythia was named after William Forsyth.Buisson de forsythia. Jardin parisien. image by Bruno Bernier from Fotolia.com
Forsythia bushes, Forsythia Vahl, are another popular choice for landscaping. This flowering bush was named after royal British gardener William Forsyth. The bell-shaped blooms on forsythia can be pink or yellow. Forsythia grows quickly and is best suited to full sun or light shade. Because they grow quickly, they are a good choice for borders or privacy screens. Forsythia bushes are deciduous, which means they drop their leaves in the fall, thereby reducing their effectiveness as a screen outside of the growing season. - Jasmine is popular for its unique fragrance.she smells the jasmine flowers image by Alexandra Gnatush-Kostenko from Fotolia.com
The Jasminum L., more commonly known as jasmine, is a popular flower because of its unique fragrance. Jasmine is a bush or climbing vine and has white or yellow flowers and grows best in tropical or warm temperate climates. There is a true jasmine, which belongs to the Oleaceae family, and a false jasmine, which belongs to the Loganiaceae family. Both have a similar fragrance, but they are very different plants. True jasmine isn't poisonous, while false jasmine is highly toxic. - There are seven species of the Chionanthus L., or fringetree. The fringetree is a large shrub or small tree with fragrant white blooms in the spring. In the fall, dark blue fruits attract birds and the leaves turn yellowish-green to brown. The fringetree grows to be 12 to 20 feet tall with a width of 12 to 20 feet. Fringetrees grow best in moist, well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade.

The Ligustrum L., also called privet, is widely used in landscaping as a hedge or shrub. Because privets are tolerant of heavy pruning, they are well-suited to be clipped hedges. They have attractive white flowers in the late spring and early summer, but the odor is pungent and some people may find it objectionable. Privets grow rapidly, which means they must be pruned heavily and frequently to prevent them from spreading past their allotted areas.
