How to Shade a Rounded Cube

    • 1). Think of the direction of the light source. The lighter side of the rounded cube will be facing the light. No matter what angle the rounded cube is viewed from, only three sides will be visible at a time. This will be either the top and two sides, or the bottom and two sides, and is due to the shape of a cube. Shade the side, top, or bottom of the rounded cube that is against the light source first with heavy pencil pressure. Turn the pencil on its side and move back and forth to do this. Make this side the darkest since it is untouched by the light. Lighten the pressure slightly when coming to the rounded corners of the cube, since these will have some light hitting them and are part of another side.

    • 2). Shade the side, top, or bottom that is slightly away from the light source with a lighter shade of gray than the first. This part of the rounded cube will receive some light, but will not be as bright as the part directly in the light. Do light gray strokes by reducing pencil pressure. Blend this gray tone at the rounded edges with the darker tone of the cube part that is away from the light. Run the gray pencil strokes right into the dark tones to even it out.

    • 3). Leave the side, top, or bottom of the rounded cube that is directly in the light white.
