- Though the Dyson Air Multiplier appears to be a completely bladeless fan, it does feature a bladed turbine or impeller in the base of the unit to drive the airflow. This turbine draws air in through a set of vents circling the base and blows it up through the housing of the device to the upper airfoil ring. From there, it passes through a set of angled slits on the inner surface of the airfoil, blowing toward the front of the fan in a constant stream.
- As the air moves along the inner surface of the airfoil, it creates a low-pressure zone centered in the middle of the ring. This draws in air from behind the unit, increasing the airflow through the ring and toward the user in a process called inducement. In addition, the flow also causes the air around the ring to move in kind, generating even more airflow in the direction the Air Multiplier is pointing. Dyson claims their devices move 15 times more air than a comparably sized conventional fan, and do so without the buffeting that comes from fan blades chopping through the air stream.
- The primary advantage of the Air Multiplier’s design is its energy efficiency. By using pressure dynamics to increase the airflow, the fan moves more air while using less energy than conventional fans. In addition, the lack of exterior moving parts makes the device easier to clean and maintain, and prevents children or pets from being injured by high-speed rotating blades. The airflow generated by the Air Multiplier is also smoother than that generated by a conventional fan, because fan blades cause buffeting and turbulence in the airstream.
- The major disadvantage of the Dyson Air Multiplier is its price tag. The 10-inch tabletop model retails for $299, while larger fans and heaters based on the same technology can fetch as much as $449. Since conventional fans and heaters cost a small fraction of the Dyson price, this can make the choice to purchase one of these unique models a significant financial decision.
