Fishing in Eastern Pennsylvania
- In Pennsylvania, you can fish for large or smallmouth bass on one of the lakes recommended by Pennsylvania Game and Fish (PGF). An extensive list of approved trout waters is provided by the Fish and Boat Commission (FBC) for brook, brown and rainbow trout. Other fish in eastern Pennsylvania include pickerel, yellow perch, sunfish, muskellunge, catfish, walleye, crappie, sucker, fallfish and carp.
- Bass fishing lakes include Nockamixon, Marsh Creek, Hopewell, Struble and Pinchot, according to PGF. The mountains in northeastern Pennsylvania offer state parks with lake fishing, such as the upper and lower lakes of Promised Land State Park and the two lakes in Gouldsboro State Park, according to the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR). In the Philadelphia area, Neshaminy State Park in Bucks County features the Delaware River and Neshaminy Creek.
- Some fishing areas have restrictions on boats, such as Hopewell Lake and Marsh Creek Lake, which permit only electric motors. Many have multiple boat launches. Neshaminy State Park allows unlimited horsepower motors and features seasonal rentals of marina slips, according to DCNR. You must display a boat registration on all motorboats, and all other boats must display a registration or a mooring or launching permit from the FBC. Some locations, such as Promised Land State Park, offer rentals of canoes, rowboats, kayaks, paddle boats and electric motors.
- A fishing license is required for anyone 16 or older, according to the Fish and Boat Commission. License options include annual licenses for residents or nonresidents, senior residents, lifetime senior residents, one-day for residents or tourists and three-day or seven-day licenses for tourists. Trout/salmon permits and Lake Erie permits are additional. Your license, signed in ink, must be showing on your outer clothing while fishing. Additionally, anglers may be requested to provide identification.
- Ice fishing during the winter is another opportunity in eastern Pennsylvania. Destinations include Promised Land State Park, Gouldsboro State Park and Neshaminy Creek. Trout, bass and pickerel are a few of the fish that can be caught while ice fishing. The DCNR warns that the thickness of the ice is not monitored. Ice should be at least four inches thick for safe fishing.
