How to Mulch With a Push Lawn Mower
- 1). Check the height of the grass and the height setting on the mower. Most grass should never be cut lower than one-third of its present height. If the grass is 3 inches tall, adjust the mowing height to cut off 1 inch of grass.
- 2). Test the wetness of the grass. If the lawn is too wet, grass blades may clog the mower, making the mulching aspect of your mower less effective.
- 3). Maintain the cutting blade. A sharp blade will make sure the grass is cut and then recut as the blade spins in the mower deck.
- 4). Vary the pattern in which the lawn is mowed. If a lawn is mowed in rows that run north to south, mow in a west to east direction the next time. Try a diagonal direction the next time. This helps prevent wheel ruts from forming in the soil.
