How to Check for a Leak in a Pool Liner

    • 1). Turn off your automatic fill valve if your pool has one. If you are not sure whether you have a leak, place a bucket on the highest step of the pool. Fill the bucket with water so the level of water on the inside and outside the bucket is the same. Compare the water level again in a day or two. If the water level outside the bucket is lower than inside the bucket, you have a leak.

    • 2). Notice whether the water level seems to fall to a particular level quickly, then taper off. This is an indication of the level of the leak. A leak at the top will only leak when the water level is above the tear. A pool that continues to lose water indicates a leak lower in the pool, possibly at the bottom seam.

    • 3). Look for indications of a leak on the ground around the pool. Soggy soil or signs that soil that has been washed away are indications of a possible leak. Also look for small bits of dirt and debris that may have been sucked into the crack in the liner.

    • 4). Check the bottom of the pool for small dips in the liner, possibly indicating soil or sand has been washed away by a leak. If you cannot find the leak, you may need to don a face mask and spend time underwater inspecting the pool liner surface to find potential leaks.

    • 5). Drop a little food coloring or a few drops of the pH test reagent near the site of a suspected leak. Make sure the pump is off and the water is still. Look to see where the food coloring goes. If it is near a leak, it will be drawn toward the leak.
