    Hardiness of Crab Apple Trees

    • Crab apple trees are hardy, deciduous trees that can survive temperatures as low as -35 degrees F. They are categorized as being able to tolerate zone 3 of the planting hardiness map, meaning they can be planted as far north as Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. They thrive best in the median hardiness zones of 6 to 7, which include southern parts of Illinois, Iowa and Indiana. These climates have strong but manageable winters where the ground does freeze, but temperatures rarely go below zero. A crab apple tree can tolerate these low temperatures because it goes through a dormant period when, during winter months, it will draw all of its nutrients into the trunk and root system.

    Determine the Right Zone

    • Crab apple trees will survive well in any zone between 3 and 8. Each zone is based on the average minimum temperature experienced. Plants and trees are then rated and placed into zone levels based on their tolerance to those temperatures. The Western United States is a very diverse region, encompassing six different zones across 11 states. You can find zone 3 outside of Idaho Falls, Idaho, whereas you will find zone 8 in Seattle, Washington.

The crab apple tree can be planted in northern Maine, southern Georgia and eastern California. Refer to the USDA hardiness zone map to locate your specific zone. Find a link in References.
