How to Spool Line on a Bait Casting Reel

    • 1). Remove any existing line from the rod and reel. Take the spool of line out of the box. Set up a small bowl that is only slightly larger than the spool and about the length of a pen or pencil. Fill the bowl half way up with water. With the pencil, poke a hole through the center of the spool and stick it through. Place the spool and pencil in the bowl.

    • 2). Take the end of the line and pull it out a little. The pencil will allow the spool to spin freely and the dampness from the water will serve as a lubricant helping the line to cling to the reel better without tangling. Stick the line through the last eye on the fishing rod. Then stick the line through the inside of the bait caster and wrap it around the spool.

    • 3). Tie a double knot around the spool of the bait caster and then cut off the excess on the end, known as the tag line. Tighten your drag to the maximum amount. Get comfortable in your seat because reeling your spool is going to take some time.

    • 4). Hold the line with your forefinger and thumb. Gently apply pressure with your fingers and slowly reel in the line. Watch the spool as you reel to make sure the line goes on the reel smoothly and most importantly, untangled.

    • 5). Reel all the way up until the spool is filled. Cut the line off and pull the end of the line through the eyes of the rod. Leave excess line to tie on your hooks and lures then get ready to cast.
