How to Arrange Flowers in Pots
- 1). Pick your pot and your flowers. To determine the number of flowers needed, first find a flowerpot. A circular flowerpot usually has a diameter label on it. If not, measure the width of the opening of the top of the flowerpot. Measure in inches. Divide that number by two. That's how many flowers to plant in the flowerpot. Pick a variety of sizes and types of plants, as that is the key to a beautiful arrangement.
- 2). Plan the arrangement. Don't plant until the end. Just lay the plants out until the setup works.
- 3). Put the largest ones in the middle. Placing the largest plant or plants in the center of the flowerpot ensures that all the flowers are visible. Think of the flower arrangement as an upside-down cone on top of the flowerpot. This way the arrangement builds from the outside inwards.
- 4). Keep trailing plants on the outside. Vines and ivies go at the edges, where they can hang over and trail. This creates a contrast to the pot, and allows the plant to grow to its full potential. It also follows the upside-down cone rule, since the trailing plants are short.
- 5). Fill between the edge and the center with medium and small plants. All the filler plants go between the trailing plants and the large plants.
- 6). Spread out similar plants. Don't group together all the plants of the same kind. The goal is for the flower arrangement to be beautiful from every viewpoint. Space out plants that are the same, and use plants that differ widely enough that they create a variety of textures and colors.
- 7). Separate the colors. Spread the colors throughout the arrangement. This keeps the pot colorful from every angle. If any flowers are the same color, further separate those with different-colored flowers.
- 8). Plant the flowers. Fill the pot about halfway with potting soil. Place the plants, and fill around them with more potting soil. Fill around all the plant roots, patting the soil down. Hold the plants up gently while adding soil so they don't fall over.
