The use of shark cartilage as a dry powder or its various derivatives for the treatment of cancer is widespread proceeds. In U.S. is estimate than 50 000 patients have used either as immunotherapy or associated with conventional cancer therapy. Estimates indicate that other Fuentes in the world 25000 to 100000 people consume every year. Among the factors considered in this work the authors contributing to the spread of its use is the first character of this dreadful disease. Only in the U.S. die annually about 600000 cancer patients each year and more than one million new cases arise. Conventional cancer therapy is effective in 40 % of cases, while the rest die before age 5. Among patients with advanced cancer, less than 20 % survive more than 5 years. Second is the fact that the product is registered and approved as a nutritional supplement in many countries. Finally, one could point out that there is a whole industry dedicated to international production and marketing, and make the market volume CT in 1996 and reached the 50 million dollars.

Clearly disproportionate to the aforementioned statistics of widespread use of CT, is the scarcity of scientific publications that endorse this product for therapeutic purposes. The year 1993 seems to be the time at which the "discovery" of the benefit in the use of CT for the treatment of cancer occurs. A year earlier he had published a book of WI Lane and L. Cognac, 40 where convenience of use in cancer therapy argued. However, it was not from television broadcasting in the U.S, preliminary information about a clinical trial developed in Cuba with a ct produced industrially by industry WI Lane, who began his popularity as an alternative therapy. Cuban fragmentary clinical trial results were reported, 2,4,6 were scored by authors from other countries as anecdotal and fragmentarios.6, 7.38 In a scientific paper nacional3 J. Menendez and J. Fernandez - Britain raised with reference to the Cuban experience this at the time ( 1993) was not sufficient for generalization, but became apparent benefits of a set of CT: almost absolute safety, observation of tumor volume reduction areas (especially prostate ); evidence immune modulator effect, especially in the cellular fraction of the process and improvement of immunity parameters that measure the quality of life in a large number of patients.

Within 5 years has not reached a scientifically supported, on the action of CT or its derivatives in the treatment of cancer final conclusion. An outcome negativo6 was published last year in a clinical phase I / II in a small sample of patients with different cancer sites (lung, breast, colon and rectum, and others) in stages III- IV. The scientific question and the public have probably contributed to the decision by the U.S. Congress in the autumn of last year to approve a budget of 50 million dollars for scientific research and become Alternative Medicine Institute (similar to the existing 18) the Office of Alternative Medicine, which was an appendage of the Office of the Director National Institute of Health that country. This Institute, with the National cancer Institute, has been allocated 2.5 million dollars in 1999 to a clinical trial of CT in a sample of 800 patients with lung cancer. A substance derived from CT on Neovostat, developed in Canada, and the test is considered from now as one of the largest ever undertaken in the country to validate an alternative therapy used.
