How to Set Up a Shakespeare Reel
- 1). Mount the Shakespeare reel on a rod to make it easier to handle. The feet of the reel slip underneath the reel seats on the rod. The rear seat is adjustable to slip over the foot of the Shakespeare reel and then secures in place by turning a lock nut clockwise on the rod handle.
- 2). Insert the reel handle through the side hole in the reel body, either for left-handed fishing (handle installs from the left) or right-handed fishing (insert the handle on the right side). Secure the handle on the opposite end with the threaded cap provided with the Shakespeare reel.
- 3). Thread new line through the rod tip and each line guide on the rod down to the Shakespeare reel; then insert the line below the wire bait that extends around the spool.
- 4). Wrap the line several revolutions around the spool, tie it with an overhand knot, and then clip the excess line.
- 5). Add line to the spool by turning the reel handle at a steady pace, about one full rotation per second, until the line reaches the fill mark on the inside of spool cap.
- 6). Cut the line, and tie a snap swivel to the end, using a clinch knot.
