How to Rig a Fishing Surf Leader

    • 1). Tie the top of the leader to the main line using a clinch knot. Instructions for tying this knot are linked in the reference section.

    • 2). Add a snelled hook to each of the two outrigger wires. These are the wires extending to the sides of the leader with a loop on each end. Push the loop of line on the end of the snelled hook through the wire loop on the leader and pull it through, then turn the hook through the loop of fishing line and pull tight in a simple overhand knot to secure the hook to the leader. Repeat for the lower outrigger line so the leader now has two hooks dangling from the sides.

    • 3). Clip a pyramid sinker to the snap at the bottom of the leader, using a weight appropriate for the surf conditions. A 1-oz. to 2-oz. sinker should provide ample weight under most surf fishing conditions. The pyramid shape helps hold the weight to the bottom to prevent the bait from drifting around.

    • 4). Rig each hook using bait suitable to the fish you want to catch. Strips of squid hooked at the ends make great bait for flounder, which are bottom feeders. Chunks of clam and shrimp are good for sea trout, spot and croakers. Bluefish are drawn the the scent of bloodworms.

    • 5). Cast the baited rig behind the waves of the breaking surf, where bait fish gather.
