How to Edge With Boulders
- 1). Measure the width of some of your larger boulders. Use a shovel to dig a trench along the garden's edge. Make the trench as wide as the large boulders and 4 to 6 inches deep. Save the soil you remove so you can use it in a later step.
- 2). Cut a strip of garden fabric, with a scissors, long enough and wide enough to fit in the trench. Multiple pieces of fabric may be needed to accomplish this. Lay the garden fabric in the trench. Hold the landscape fabric in place by pushing an anchor pin through each corner and into the soil.
- 3). Lay the boulders in the trench. Position the boulders so the flattest side is facing down. Vary sizes and colors as you work your way down the border. Placing too many small boulders next to each other followed by a bunch of larger boulders makes the edging look disorganized.
- 4). Lay a 2-by-4 on top of the boulders. Place a level on the board. Use a hammer to tap the board until it is level. The goal is not to make each boulder's height the same, but rather keep some of the taller boulders from looking out of place by being too high.
- 5). Fill in the area surrounding the boulders with the dirt you removed in Step 1. Pack the dirt in any gaps between boulders. Lightly water the boulder edging to settle the dirt. Use additional dirt to fill in any more gaps you find.
